The winners of the 2017 Cumberland Art and Photography Awards were announced on Saturday at the Peacock Gallery in Auburn. A number of entrants from around the Cumberland area submitted various art and photographic works of the Cumberland Local Government Area in nine different categories.
Matt Jones took home $2500 for winning the Cumberland Art Award with his piece ‘I require assistance.’ Danuta Wawrzyniec won the Cumberland Photography Award with her photograph entitled ‘Mary St, Lidcombe’ and was awarded $2000. All photographs and artworks submitted for the competition provide a snapshot of 2017 locally as well as showcasing the talents of the local artists and photographers.
“Cumberland Council, which sits in the geographical heart of Greater Sydney, is also one of the hubs of modern multicultural Australia,” said acting Cumberland Council General Manager Maxine Kenyon.
“Photography and the Arts are powerful tools for our community to share their many stories; to create connections across diversity and define their place in Sydney and the world.
“The sharing of these distinctly Cumberland ideas, perspectives and forms of creative expression paint a picture of what makes up this area. The picture I see is a fresh start and a promising future.
“I congratulate each and every one of the winners, and participants, and encourage everyone to visit the Peacock Gallery over the coming month to have a look at all the entries in this year’s awards” said Ms Kenyon.
All artwork and photography submitted will now form part of an exhibition held at the Peacock Gallery up until June 18, 2017. All art pieces are up for sale and visitors can vote on the People’s choice Art and Photography award, respectively.
