Cumberland City Council has welcomed the Federal Government’s recent grant announcement, which will see nearly $1 million allocated to road upgrades across Cumberland City.

“We have an ambitious program of capital works planned or in progress for Cumberland, including the Granville Centre, Granville Park upgrade and Wentworthville Swimming Pool redevelopment,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“In addition to these major projects, we’re committed to maintaining our public assets and infrastructure including roads, bridges and footpaths.

“The Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program is supporting Council in delivering projects that make Cumberland City a great place to live and help us deliver some important upgrades in the area.”

Projects Council has identified as suitable for grant funding include:

  • Roundabouts at John Street and Boorea Street, Lidcombe and Nottinghill Road and Kerrs Road, Regents Park.
  • Two pedestrian crossings (Louis street, Granville and Blaxcell Street near Thomas Street, Granville).
  • Road resurfacing as well as kerb and gutter works for Raglan Road to St Johns Road in Auburn and Willoughby Street, Guildford.

“We will be working with Federal and State Governments to secure their approval on these projects, so we can move forward and improve our road infrastructure and pedestrian safety, particularly with the works we have in mind,” said Mayor Christou.

“We have a very constructive working relationship with the Federal Government, and I’m pleased that we’re working together to get results for the people of Cumberland.”

The Federal Government has committed $500 million to the Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program to support jobs, businesses and the resilience of local economies.

From 1 July 2020, councils are able to access funding to support delivery of priority local road and community infrastructure projects.
