Cumberland Council celebrated its first birthday at Merrylands Oval on 12 May 2017, with a barbecue lunch and chocolate cake.
To ensure continuity of service to the community, the event was split into two one hour sessions, allowing more staff to attend. Those unable to attend for business continuity reasons had a cupcake delivered to them as part of their lunch pack.
Cumberland Council Interim General Manager Malcolm Ryan praised and thanked staff, while cutting Cumberland Council’s first birthday cake.
“This is an opportunity to recognise the dedication of hardworking Cumberland Council staff, who have shown they are determined to succeed, inclusive in their approach and progressive in their outlook,” Mr Ryan said.
“The sole reason we have been able to provide an unbroken delivery of service over the past 12 months is because of the calibre of people who choose to work at Council.
“More than that, through their efforts we have built upon what was best in our legacy organisations while going further towards greater transparency, efficiency and accountability.
“Over the past year, Cumberland Council has achieved much. And the many achievements of the new Cumberland Council are rightly seen as the achievements of our staff and the community they serve.
“We have invested $24 million back into the community with six large-scale projects; established the Cumberland Council Independent Hearing and Assessment Panel (CIHAP); launched new youth and events strategies based on extensive community consultation; and introduced significant policy reforms to foster a more transparent relationship with ratepayers.
“Over the past year, staff have overcome significant change. Today was an opportunity for them to pause, reflect and take pride in all they have achieved, both individually and as a team.
“Certainly there is more to be done, but at Cumberland Council we firmly believe our best days are before us.”
Proclamation of Cumberland Council took place on 12 May 2016. The new local government area comprises former Auburn and Holroyd council areas, as well as the Woodville Ward of the City of Parramatta.
