Cumberland Council is inviting residents to explore the full breadth of Council’s services by visiting an information stall during Local Government Week, 31 July – 6 August.

The theme for Local Government Week 2017 is “Discovery, Diversity, Democracy.” Council Staff will be available from 10am – 4pm each workday at the following locations:

  • Monday 31 July – Stockland Merrylands
  • Tuesday 1 August – Portico Plaza Shopping Centre, Toongabbie
  • Wednesday 2 August – Auburn Central
  • Thursday 3 August – Greystanes Shopping Centre
  • Friday 4 August – Lidcombe Centre

Council’s furriest staff member, Poppy the Possum, will also be there. The lovable mascot of Council’s early literacy program ‘Paint Cumberland REaD’ will hand out free copies of a new children’s book exploring local government.

Cumberland Council’s Interim General Manager Malcolm Ryan said the timing couldn’t be better, with Local Council Elections coming up on Saturday 9 September 2017.

“The lead up to an election naturally draws people’s attention to the role of Local Government and the important work we do on behalf of the community,” said Mr Ryan.

“Local Governments are so much more than roads, rates and rubbish. Everything from council-owned roads, child care centres, libraries, sports fields and cemeteries, to food safety checks, building and development, and pet registrations are all operated by councils.

“Councils provide invaluable services to local communities, 365 days a year. The week is an opportunity for residents to ‘put a face’ to Cumberland Council, by meeting our staff and asking any questions they may have.

“Being accessible and responsive are the hallmarks of any successful Local Council. Cumberland Council is committed to being a Council always at the service of the local community.

“I invite all residents of all ages to discover their Council; both how to get involved and the many, many services we offer.”
