9 December 2016 – Media Release

Cumberland Council inherited three separate approaches to waste services from the former Councils of Auburn, Holroyd and Parramatta which presents many significant issues. Council has undertaken a Waste Services Review to explore the best options moving forward with the goal of providing a consistent service to residents that will reduce costs, provide best value for money and better all-round quality.

Cumberland Council Administrator Manager Viv May explained the necessity of the review:

“The current waste services arrangement is enormously confusing, unfair and expensive for residents.

“It is unacceptable that in 2016 residents of the former Holroyd Council currently need to lug their own green waste to the Council’s Guildford West Depot while the rest of the Cumberland community has a green bin collected straight from their kerb. Not only is this arrangement unfair, but it doesn’t promote environmental sustainability.

“This review is part of a bigger picture of waste service and my goal of removing reported dumped rubbish within one working day. It is the scourge of Cumberland and ratepayers should not have to pay twice.

“If we cannot improve the current service at the same or a lesser price for residents, then it just won’t happen.

“I have no intention of outsourcing any other council services, that will be a matter for the incoming Council, but I can’t sit on my hands in regards to waste services.

“Whatever the outcome of this review, I want to make it clear that any staff member who wants to remain working at Cumberland Council, will remain working at Cumberland Council. Throughout this process the future of Council’s employees will be a priority, as will the objective of providing the high quality waste service Cumberland residents deserve.”

The report will be tabled at the 21 December Council meeting.
