4 November 2016 – Media Release

The Festival of All Abilities (FOAA) is a program of events which mark Social Inclusion Week and International Day for People with Disability and promotes the social inclusion of seniors, people with disability and carers. Council will be running a number of programs and events in collaboration with partner organisations, to create awareness about the necessity of accessible infrastructure and services.

From 24 November to 10 December more than a dozen activities will be available to everyone in the public including an All Abilities Sports Festival, a ThinkAbility Forum for advocates and professionals, Wheelchair Basketball Come N’ Try, Disability Awareness Training, Cumberland Council 2016 IDPWD Art Exhibition and much more.

Brooke Endycott, Cumberland Council Group Manager Community Services explained the importance of promoting inclusiveness in the local area:

“FOAA is a showcase of the many contributions of people with disability to our community. Cumberland Council invites all residents to show their support and develop a better understanding of this issue by taking part in the many free events taking place across the local area.”

Cumberland Council has also produced a guide of accessible restaurants and cafes in the Auburn Town Centre to coincide with the 2016 Festival of All Abilities program of events.

The map includes details of the nearest access toilet and mobility parking from each eatery. Each of these eateries will be offering a 30% discount to patrons who show a disability support pension card on Saturday 3 December in recognition of International Day for People with Disability.

The map also features details of accessible attractions, including the Auburn Botanic Gardens, Peacock Gallery, Hindu Temple and the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque.
