Jump into your traditional Philippine outfit, grab some flowers and get down to the Peacock Gallery, Auburn to celebrate the start of spring and the spirit of the Philippines in Australia. The Philippine Spring Festival is being held as part of the Talik Banaw (Looking Back) Art Exhibition by artists Ernest Aaron, Alberto Estanislao, Jessa Melicor and Alwin Reamillo.

The main event of the festival will be a flower filled parade as the Bayanihan Spirit Hopping House is handed over to Blacktown Arts Centre for the next stage of its journey. After the Parade finishes stick around for traditional Philippine entertainment and food.

The ‘Hopping House’ is an interpretation of a traditional Philippine home meant to represent the concept of ‘Bayanihan’ or ‘community unity’ explains Internationally recognised artist, Alwin Reamillo.

“Bayanihan is a custom in the Philippines which reflects pride and community spirit. The custom involves the actual moving of a house by a community on their backs,” said Mr Reamillo.

“The idea behind the exhibition is summed up by the concept of Bayanihan, which is creating a real sense of community and togetherness; whether it be lifting a house, helping out your neighbour or simply sharing some food.

“The Parade is a fun way to finish off the exhibition and see off the hopping house in proper Philippine fashion.

“I want to invite everyone down to get into the Philippine spirit, regardless of their background.

“Make sure you come dressed in your traditional Philippine clothes or, if not, then a floral outfit, floral header or anything with flowers! Let’s fill the streets with the sights and sounds of the Philippines!”
