Take a grave journey through Cumberland’s necropolis during festival

Residents and visitors can take a journey into the city that always sleeps during a tour of Cumberland’s most famous necropolis Rookwood Cemetery on Saturday 11 May 2019.

A grave entry into Cumberland Local Festival, the Friends of Rookwood Heritage Tour will take participants throughout the cemetery visiting the final resting places of notable residents and the charnel mausoleums that characterise the iconic graveyard.

Cumberland Mayor Greg Cummings said the tour will be an experience to take with you into the afterlife.

“Rookwood is Sydney’s most famous necropolis and I invite anyone who has an interest in history to attend and get a feel for where we will all end up one day,” Clr Cummings said.

“The tour will visit the grave of Peter Dodds McCormick, the man who saved the life of the Duke of Edinburgh, Bea Miles, who composed Australia’s National Anthem, and the extravagant Fraser Mausoleum.

“Rookwood has many landmarks that showcase the history and culture of Sydney, including the historic footings of Mortuary Station Number 1, the Circle of Love memorial to children, the Holocaust memorial, the Greek Church and the Chapel and Mausoleum of Eternal Rest.”

Friends of Rookwood Heritage Tour 1, 10am, 12pm

This tour will visit some significant graves, including the man who saved the life of the Duke of Edinburgh, Peter Dodds McCormick who composed Australia’s National Anthem, Bea Miles and the extravagant Fraser Mausoleum.

Friends of Rookwood Heritage Tour 2, 11am, 1pm

This tour encompasses St. Andrews Cathedral, the handsome Robert Hancock and the Hordern family, just to name a few. 

Rookwood General Cemetery Landmark Tour Landmark Tour, 10am, 1pm

Rookwood’s landmarks showcase the history and culture of the cemetery. 

The tours are free but bookings are essential.
