Cumberland Council has put a shout out for people who are looking for a rewarding way to give back to the community to volunteer their time to assist in the area of Aged and Disability Services.
General Manager Malcolm Ryan explained there are a range of roles and opportunities available, hours are flexible and the experience is mutually beneficial for service users and volunteers alike.
“Delivering meals to people’s homes, driving a community bus so people can enjoy group outings, helping with everyday tasks like grocery shopping, assisting with Centre Based Groups, even stopping in for a visit or just having a chat over the phone – these small acts of kindness make a hugely positive difference in the lives of others,” Mr Ryan said.
“Volunteering can also provide you with the opportunity to meet new people and develop new skills, and is particularly rewarding for young people seeking work experience.
“Your volunteer supervisor will be able to provide you with a statement of service, detailing your role, responsibilities and hours volunteered. They’d also be able to give a verbal reference over the phone should you need one.
“Ultimately though, there’s no better feeling than giving. We truly are richer for the experience. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing someone’s day, week or even life is somehow better, easier or happier because you’ve been there for them.”
All volunteers are allocated a supervisor who will provide training, sound guidance and direction, to make it easy and enjoyable to carry out volunteering work.
Volunteers are also covered by insurance while undertaking volunteer duties.
Adrienne Dawson who has been a volunteer with Council since 2014 has seen the big impact small acts of kindness can have.
“Sometimes a simple smile or touch can brighten a person’s day. A greeting in the morning and a chat makes people happy,” Ms Dawson said.
