Cumberland City Council is encouraging residents to celebrate Australia’s rich cultural heritage and come together at the Holroyd Gardens to celebrate Australia Day on 26 January 2021.

“Australia Day gives people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together and celebrate what it means to be Australian,” Mayor of Cumberland City Council Steve Christou said.

“It’s disappointing that some Councils have decided to cancel the event. To deny your residents a COVID-safe Australia Day celebration is completely unacceptable and unpatriotic in my view.

“At Cumberland City, we have been planning a COVID-safe program, to ensure we mark an important day for all Australians and we will be proceeding with our event in line with COVID regulations.”

Some of the key highlights will include a twilight cinema, fireworks, food and live music.

A range of planning elements, including crowd control management measures on entry and exit, compulsory registration and promotion of good hand hygiene, have been included as part of maintaining a COVID-safe event.

Australia Day celebrations in Cumberland City include the Citizen of the Year and Community Pride Awards, held in conjunction with a special Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony.

This will be followed by a free Australia Day event from 6pm to 9pm at the Holroyd Gardens.

The event has been assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.
