Cumberland residents are being encouraged to join the fight against graffiti by nominating a local graffiti site for cleaning on Graffiti Removal Day, 29 October 2017.

Residents can either register as a group or an individual and be provided with everything they need on the day – including graffiti removal kits provided by Smart Graffiti and paints provided by Dulux- or report the problem site to Council who will undertake a graffiti removal blitz in November.

Nationally, the estimated cost of graffiti and other forms of vandalism to the Australian community is $2.7 billion per year. Last year across NSW over 1,500 volunteers removed 20,000m2 of graffiti from 460 sites, an area roughly twice the size of Sydney Football Stadium.

Mayor Greg Cummings encouraged residents to get involved.

“Graffiti is a problem all across Sydney and Graffiti Removal Day is a great opportunity for people across Cumberland to rally as a community and take power of their common spaces,” Mayor Cummings said.

“Not only is this the perfect chance to increase the cleanliness and appearance of our liveable area, it’s a nice way to bring people and communities together for a common cause that all of Cumberland benefits from.

“The process is really easy; register a site on your own or with a group of family members, friends or neighbours and arrive on the day ready to get to work.

“You will be provided with free cleaning material, paint, safety equipment and training on how to safely remove graffiti. Check www.graffitiremovalday.com for sites already nominated near you.

“Alternatively, if you can’t help out on the day or know of a site that’s highly problematic, call Cumberland Council on 8757 9000 and the site will be cleaned within 24 hours.”

Those who cannot make on the day can support this great event by promoting it on Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #GRD17 and #lovewherewelive.
