Cumberland Council will be celebrating World Environment Day with an interactive stall at Stockland Merrylands from 5 June – 7 June 2018 for residents to learn about Council’s waste and resource recovery services.

Council’s resource recovery team will be educating the community on available waste and resource recovery services including what problem waste is, how to reduce plastic bag use and how to get rid of problem waste such as old electrical equipment, mobile phones or batteries. Council staff will also be engaging with residents to find out what they know about the available clean-up and recycling services through a short survey.

Mayor Greg Cummings said residents should make the most of Council staff being out in the community to ask questions and find out more information about Council’s waste and recycling services and how they can be more environmentally friendly at home.

“Cumberland Council is committed to supporting residents to make active changes to become more sustainable. This year’s World Environment Day theme is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution. If you can’t reuse it, refuse it’ calling on residents to make active choices about single-use plastics including to bring reusable bags and refuse plastic bags while shopping,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“Plastic bags are causing major environmental challenges around the world. Our friendly resource recovery staff will be asking residents to complete a short survey and in return will be offering limited free reusable bags, made locally by Australian Disability Services from recycled hessian coffee bean bags. These are a great substitute for plastic shopping bags.

“Another way we help residents to reduce their environmental impact is through the free collection and rehoming service for household furniture and items that are in good usable condition, to help residents avoid throwing out good quality household items. Council is working hard to empower our residents to take charge of their waste and become more sustainable citizens.”

More information about Council’s waste and resource recovery services including what can and cannot be collected in a clean-up can be found at cumberland.nsw.gov.au/environment.

Council staff will be located in Stockland Merrylands on level 1 near Woolworths from 9.30am – 4.30pm from Tuesday 5 June 2018 until Thursday 7 June 2018. Alternatively, you can Have Your Say, and go in the draw to win one of three Sustainability Resource Packs, at haveyoursay.cumberland.nsw.gov.au.
