7 July 2016 – Media Release
The winners of the inaugural Cumberland Art and Photography Awards were announced on Saturday 2 July 2016 at the Peacock Gallery in Auburn. A number of entrants from around the local government area submitted various art and photography pieces in seven different categories. Ilya Akhmedov took home $2500 for winning the Cumberland Art Award with his piece ‘Hard Workers of Auburn.’ Marian Abboud won the Cumberland Photography Award with her photograph titled ‘The Secret Handshake 1’ and was awarded $2000. All photographs and artworks submitted for the competition provide a snapshot of 2016 locally as well as showcasing the talents of the local artists and photographers.
“It was an honour to present these awards to the first ever winners of the Cumberland Art & Photography Awards. It is very important that the creative talent in the local area is given a medium through which to express themselves and be acknowledged for their talents” said Mr Viv May, Administrator of Cumberland Council.
“I congratulate each and every one of the winners, and participants, and encourage everyone to visit the Peacock Gallery over the coming month to have a look at all the entries in this year’s awards” said Mr May.
All submissions will be on exhibition at the Peacock Gallery, Auburn up until Sunday 31 July. Drop in and vote for your favourite works in the ‘People’s Choice’ awards with the artist and photographer with the most
