Cumberland Council staff have been recognised at the Environmental Health Australia (NSW) Inc. Excellence Awards for outstanding work in their field.

Lisa Hughes was awarded the highest accolade of the night being presented with Environmental Health Professional of the Year, the third time in four years that a Cumberland Council staff member has received the industry’s highest award. This award recognised Lisa’s contribution to the field of environmental health and her current mentoring of women in Environmental Health at Western Sydney University

Ben Cone was awarded Trainee Environmental Health Officer of the Year for his impressive contribution and development in his work.

Cumberland Council was also shortlisted in two categories. Council’s Environmental Health Team was nominated for Environmental Health Team of the Year, and Brad Sinclair was nominated for Early Career Environmental Health Professional of the Year for his research in the areas of Splash Park’s in public pools.

Hamish McNulty, Cumberland Council General Manager said the awards were well deserved recognition of the important service that the Environmental Health Team members provide to the community.

“Our Environmental Health team are responsible for a broad range of activities including inspecting food, industrial and public health premises; noise monitoring programs; monitoring the water quality of local creeks and public pools; managing food, environment and public health complaints; and running education seminars,” Mr McNulty said.

“In the past year our Environmental Health Team have conducted more than 1,450 retail food inspections, 240 public health inspections, hosted 14 retail food handler seminars and responded to more than 600 customer enquiries.

“Cumberland residents are fortunate to have such professional and dedicated Environmental Health staff working on their behalf. Our staff are a great asset to this community and are committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for the residents of Cumberland. I congratulate our award winners and thank them for their service to Cumberland.”
