Cumberland Council Mayor Greg Cummings and the Hon. Stuart Ayres MP, Minister for Western Sydney and Minister for Sport have reopened six netball courts at Marie Dunn OAM netball courts, Lidcombe after a $200,000 upgrade.
The upgrade was as a result of a NSW Government Grant that Cumberland Council successfully received in 2017.
Mayor Greg Cummings and Minister Ayres were joined by Vicki Newby, President of the Parramatta Auburn Netball Association; Kim Higgins, Manager of Netball 4 All; and Maddie Proud, NSW Swifts player.
Mayor Greg Cummings said after receiving the grant last year it was great to see the upgrades complete and ready for use by Parramatta Auburn Netball Association and the broader community.
“For many Cumberland residents living nearby, Wyatt Park is their ‘back yard.’ It is where they come to get outside, be active and have a good time. Now they can do it on sporting facilities that are fit for purpose and which will be well maintained by Council,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.
“This project is just part of Council’s plans for Wyatt Park. Our two draft Plans of Management, which were recently on public exhibition, propose a range of improvements, including new playgrounds, Youth Centre and multipurpose rooms, barbeque and picnic facilities, a learn-to–ride bicycle track, shared pedestrian and cycle pathways, better lighting, upgrades to amenities, and much, much more.
“Our sporting culture makes up a large part of the great community spirit we have in Cumberland. Sport plays a vital role in bringing our diverse community together and helping everyone to feel welcome and belong.”
Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said he was pleased to see that the netball court upgrades are complete and the community benefiting from NSW Government investment into community sport.
“These community sport facilities are central to helping people stay fit and active – our strong economic performance means the NSW Government can afford to invest in sport at all levels,” Mr Ayres said.
“The six upgraded courts here at Marie Dunn Netball Courts in Wyatt Park cater to beginners, rep and social teams so everyone has a safe reliable surface to play on.”
