Cumberland Council is giving away up to 600 native plants to local residents on Sunday 27 May 2018 between 11am to 4pm as part of the Auburn Botanic Gardens Open Day.

Council is working towards a cleaner, greener Cumberland and residents are invited to collect a young tree or shrub to plant in their own garden to help increase the local government area’s green canopy.

‘Snake Vine’ (Hibbertia Scandens), ‘Coffee Bush’ (Breynia Oblongfolia) and ‘Thyme Honey-myrtle’ (Melaleuca Thymifolia) are just some of the native plants on offer during the day.

“Adding a tree to your garden can help improve the wildlife corridor across Sydney and NSW,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“It can also be incredibly satisfying to see a plant you have nurtured grow and attract wildlife to your garden.

“Those who receive a young tree on the day will be eligible to enter a post-event photo competition with the opportunity to win a $250 Bunnings voucher.

“We want people to show us how they are helping to strengthen Cumberland’s green environment by posting a photo of their tree once it has been planted in its new home.”

Basic plant care advice will be provided with each young tree and a representative of Cumberland’s Parks and Recreation team will also be on hand for part of the day to assist visitors with enquiries.
