Cumberland Council is using National Volunteer Week (21 – 27 May) to celebrate the generous contribution of residents who volunteer, while inviting more people to get involved.

Mayor Greg Cummings explained there are a range of roles and opportunities available, hours are flexible and the experience is mutually beneficial for service users and volunteers.

“Delivering meals to people’s homes, driving a community bus, helping with everyday tasks like grocery shopping, assisting with Centre Based Groups, even stopping in for a visit or just having a chat over the phone – these small acts of kindness make a hugely positive difference in the lives of others,” Mayor Cummings said.

“Volunteering provides the opportunity to meet new people and develop new skills, and is particularly rewarding for young people seeking work experience.

“Ultimately though, there’s no better feeling than giving. It’s rewarding knowing that someone’s day, week or even life is somehow better, easier or happier because you’ve been there for them.”

All volunteers are allocated a supervisor who will provide training, sound guidance and direction, to make it easy and enjoyable to carry out volunteering work. Volunteers are also covered by insurance while undertaking volunteer duties.

“Your volunteer supervisor will be able to provide you with a statement of service, detailing your role, responsibilities and hours volunteered. They’d also be able to give a verbal reference over the phone should you need one,” Mayor Cummings said.

Yuvarani Sondron said that she started volunteering with Cumberland Council Aged and Disability team to be able to meet new people and give something back to the community.

Ms Sondron said “by volunteering I’m not only able to help some people in need but also get something out of it for myself. I feel a lot of self-satisfaction and pride in working with the social inclusion team. I’d encourage anyone to get involved, it’s a great opportunity.”
