Nearly 100 residents of refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds are taking part in a free learn-to-swim program.

The classes are funded by Royal Life Saving, which received a water safety grant to improve water safety with adult refugee and migrant participants.

“Swimming and water safety are valuable life skills and it’s terrific that this program is providing up to five free classes, in a wonderfully inclusive and supportive environment,” said Mayor Greg Cummings.

“Now is a great time for people to build up their swimming and water safety skills so that when the summer swimming season arrives they are confident in the water.”

Those participating in the program are the parents of students studying at local public schools.

The program commenced on Saturday, 1 September 2019 and runs until the end of the October school holidays.

Cumberland Council is a proud partner of the Swim and Survive program; a swimming and water safety initiative of Royal Life Saving that seeks to increase water safety skills to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity.
