30 Mar 2020 - General news

Cumberland City Council is closing its parks, outdoor exercise equipment, sports grounds and public toilets to support the latest Federal Government directive in an effort to stop the spread of Coronavirus.

Council’s face-to-face Customer Service function will also be suspended, however, residents can continue to contact Council by telephone or online.

“This health crisis is escalating and Council is taking immediate steps to suspend all Council events, programs and services that are not considered to be essential,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

Essential services continuing are:

  • Waste collection
  • City sweeping
  • Customer Service (by telephone or email). Residents can contact Council 02 8757 9000; email council@cumberland.nsw.gov.au or provide feedback online at www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au
  • Meals on Wheels
  • Feeding animals stationed at Central Gardens and Auburn Botanical Gardens
  • Public health officers for any complaints; and
  • Safety maintenance for roads, footpaths and parks.

Council-run child care centres remain open, with the exception of Pemulwuy Children’s Centre. The Pemulwuy Children’s Centre was closed after a parent tested positive for COVID-19. Following a hospital-grade clean, the Pemulwuy Children’s Centre is expected to reopen from Wednesday, this week (1 April 2020).

In addition, Council will continue to accept development applications via email and online requests for planning certificates. Arrangements are also being made for the Cumberland Local Planning Panel to meet through teleconferencing.

Council has closed its public libraries, swimming pools, community centres and playgrounds. The majority of Council staff are working from home to minimise face-to-face contact and the potential spread of the virus.

“I want to thank residents for being patient with us and I know these changes will inconvenience some people but we need to act in the best interest of the community and follow the latest guidance from State and Federal Governments,” said Mayor Christou.

“I want to reassure residents that essential services like waste collection and Meals on Wheels will continue and we’re still undertaking emergency maintenance for Council assets and infrastructure to help us return to normality when this pandemic is over.

“Please listen to the advice of health authorities. Practise good hygiene, don’t move around unless you have to and keep a distance of 1.5 metres or more from people where possible.

“If you are over the age of 70, please stay inside. Call Council’s Seniors and Disability Team on 02 8757 9041 if you know someone who needs help and for more information.

“If you run a business and are affected, we encourage you to look at the Federal and State Government stimulus measures. As a Council we will do everything we can to provide relief for residents and small businesses during this uncertain time.”
