Three residents and a community organisation have been recognised for their dedication to the Cumberland community at Council’s Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony.
The ceremony also welcomed nearly 150 new residents into the Cumberland community as Australian citizens.
Cumberland City Mayor Lisa Lake congratulated the award recipients and finalists on their efforts.
“These awards acknowledge the contributions, hard work and dedication of individuals and community groups in our community,” said Mayor Lake.
“It’s such a pleasure to recognise the people and organisations who tirelessly devote their time and energy to making Cumberland a great place to live, work and play.”
The Australia Day Ambassador, CEO/Founder of Rufus & Coco, Anneke van den Broek also attended the event and helped present the awards.
Those who officially became citizens on the day originated from 27 countries including parts of South Asia, Asia and the Middle East.
Mayor Lake said it was a pleasure to formally welcome new citizens into the community.
“Cumberland is a place where everyone is welcome; where anyone can belong; and where everyone is encouraged to succeed,” Mayor Lake said.
“Today is an opportunity for us all to appreciate our culturally diverse community and reflect on this great place we call home.”
An Australia Day community event was held later in the evening at Holroyd Gardens which featured live performances, a range of food and a spectacular fireworks display.

2023 Community Pride Award – Individual - Sankalp Mehta
Sankalp is a strong support person for members of the community, and has dedicated his time and efforts into assisting those impacted by COVID-19 with the provision of free cooked meals, essential grocery items and emotional support.
Sankalp has selflessly helped others wherever he can and encourages people to donate blood or plasma to the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood.
2023 Community Pride Award – Group or Organisation – Rotary Club of Granville
The Rotary Club of Granville works tirelessly to support various charities and communities across Australia. Over the last year, the Rotary Club distributed over 1,150 grocery hampers to the disadvantaged and partnered with likeminded organisations to deliver hot meals to the homeless. The club has also facilitated community programs and forums including the Women’s Wellness Forum and a Seniors Digital Literacy Program.
2023 Local Young Citizen of the Year – Alisha Khan
Alisha is a local tutor who has mentored young students with their school studies. She inspires her students to reach their full potential and provides valuable support and assistance.
2023 Local Citizen of the Year – Haijing Gao
Haijing is a passionate volunteer within the Cumberland community. She has helped local residents who are elderly, disabled and from non-English speaking backgrounds carry out their everyday tasks. Haijing has assisted residents with accessing services such as Council’s free Household Clean Up Collection. Her kindness and positive attitude has encouraged others to volunteer.
