Cumberland Council to celebrate diversity and inclusivity for International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPWD)

28 Nov 2023 - Events

Cumberland Council will be celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity as part of the celebrations for International Day of People with Disability (IDPWD).

As part of the festivities for IDPWD Council will be hosting two free events including a Celebration Disco on Saturday 9 December and the Festival of Ability Showcase on Friday 15 December.

Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake said Council is committed to fostering an environment that values and supports individuals of all abilities.

“Council is committed to providing equal access to the facilities, programs, services and information without discrimination or barriers, as outlined in the Cumberland Disability Inclusion Action Plan,” said Mayor Lake.

“Council is continuously working towards making Cumberland a place for all by providing opportunities that promote inclusivity, recognise the rights and contributions of people with disability and champions diversity. We want everyone to feel welcome, valued and that they belong, so I encourage everyone to join us in showing their support for IDPWD.”

Council’s IDPWD program aims to showcase and celebrate people with disability, promote understanding, highlight all abilities and raise public awareness of the contributions people with disability make in our community.

Recognised by the UN, International Day of People with a Disability is a global celebration held annually on December 3. The theme this year is ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities’. This aims to promote awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the diverse contributions of people of all abilities.
