The long-awaited $11 million Merrylands Civic Square officially opens to the public on Friday 4 August, offering residents and visitors a bustling state-of-the-art multifunctional public space.
Cumberland Council is inviting the community to attend the grand opening on Friday 4 August from 4pm to 10:30pm. The event will feature a great range of food trucks, live music from bands such as Lolo Lovina and Mojo Paua, fire and circus performances, children’s face painting and craft activities, community performances and lots more! Entry to the event is free. Residents can enter from 203 Merrylands road or McFarlane street opposite Stockland Mall.
Located in the heart of Merrylands, this space connects Merrylands Road to McFarlane Street, revitalising the town centre into a meeting place for the community, fostering social engagement and offering a range of activities.
Mayor Lisa Lake said the new public space will provide residents with a dynamic community hub that is welcoming, fosters connections, celebrates diversity and is a place for all to enjoy.
“Merrylands Civic Square represents a significant milestone for Cumberland. This vibrant space will serve as a catalyst for connection, culture, and creativity in our community,” said Mayor Lake.
“It will also help boost the local night life and economy, bringing diverse cultures together and providing the community with a unique place for family and friends to gather.”
The new public space features large trees and landscaped areas, art, furniture and amenities including bike racks, water feature, smart bins, smart light poles, tables and benches.
Merrylands Civic Square is a place for cultural gatherings and events, as well as social activities given its ideal location in the heart of Merrylands and proximity to local retail outlets and businesses.
This project has been funded by the NSW Government through its NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program and in association with Cumberland Council.
