26 May 2020 - General news

Cumberland City Council is responding to new COVID-19 guidance from both Federal and State levels of government, in line with new eased restrictions.

"Alongside our parks, playgrounds and outdoor exercise equipment, our sports ovals, selected libraries and Guildford Swimming Centre’s indoor pool will reopen,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“From 29 May 2020, Guildford Swimming Pool can have 6 swimmers at a time (1 per lane – 6 lanes) for indoor squad training.

“Council will be accepting bookings for training sessions of up to 10 people at each of our sports ovals.

“The Auburn and Merrylands libraries will open from 1 June for collections and returns only, with new measures in place. This includes physical distancing protocols, hand hygiene facilities and regular cleaning and disinfecting of books and surfaces. All other library services remain suspended at this time.”

The Peacock Gallery is also expected to reopen from 3 June.

From June 1, the following will be allowed in NSW:

  • outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people
  • cafes and restaurants can seat 50 patrons at any one time (group bookings must not exceed 10)
  • up to 5 visitors to a household at any one time
  • weddings up to 10 guests
  • indoor funerals up to 20 mourners, outdoor funerals up to 30.

Community halls remain closed at this point. Council's face-to-face Customer Service function remains suspended. Residents can contact Council 02 8757 9000; email council@cumberland.nsw.gov.au or provide feedback online at www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au.

“Council will be running a stringent cleaning regime in high-touch areas to make sure these areas are safe environments and to help limit the spread of the virus,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“We must remain vigilant and use our facilities with caution. This will only work if people do the right thing and follow health advice and physical distancing in these spaces.

“We appreciate your patience as we continue to reopen Council services and facilities in a way that reflects the latest health advice.

“We will slowly and safely come out the other side of this pandemic.”
