Council is inviting the youngest budding green thumbs through to the most experienced garden gurus to enter Cumberland’s second Annual Garden Competition.

Entries open on 1 September 2017 – as soon as spring has sprung! – and there are six categories to choose from:

  • Open Garden
  • Native Garden
  • Commercial / Industrial
  • Small Garden
  • Schools and Community Grounds
  • Senior Citizens’ Garden

Entry forms can be downloaded from www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au, mailed out upon request, or picked up from Council’s administration centres at Auburn and Merrylands, as well as libraries and community centres across Cumberland.

General Manager Malcolm Ryan explained the Annual Garden Competition had been a tradition in the former Holroyd City Council for more than 30 years and encouraged the broader Cumberland Council community to get involved.

“The Annual Garden Competition brings together people from all walks of life who share a common interest in gardening and a sense of pride in their community,” Mr Ryan said.

“The categories are quite broad to cater for everyone. For example, if you live in a unit but have a fabulous balcony garden you can enter it in the Small Garden Category.

“This is an inclusive event and we strongly encourage entries from individual gardeners, families, schools, community groups, different cultural groups and commercial organisations.”

Judging will take place between 16 – 20 October by a panel comprising:

  • Manager, Bunnings Lidcombe, Blake Currell
  • Natural Area Coordinator, Auburn Botanic Gardens, Kerrie Davies
  • Head Horticulturalist, Flower Power Prospect, Melissa Moran

Winners will be announced at a presentation evening on 14 November 2017.

Category winners will receive a trophy and a $100 gift voucher, with the Grand Champion – chosen from the category winners – taking home a $500 gift voucher.
