Cumberland Council is inviting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents to become part of a consultative committee that will help shape Council’s policies, programs and service delivery.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee (ATSICC) is a forum where members can discuss issues, provide advice and ensure Council decisions benefit Indigenous residents.

Interested participants can nominate themselves before Wednesday 6 December 2017 at Council’s website under ‘Have Your Say’.

Mayor Greg Cummings said the ATSICC Committee was an indispensable pillar of Council’s engagement and partnership with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

“While Cumberland Council is a young Council, the Cumberland area has been home to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders for thousands of years,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“We want to make sure that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders feel truly welcome and able to belong within the Cumberland community.

“Too often governments and policy makers talk about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders but not with them. ATSICC members make sure we don’t fall into this trap.

“We need to make sure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, insights and opinions are available to Council and inform our decision making processes and that their rich cultural heritage is being recognised proudly by the wider community.”
