The free community open day of the Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre on Saturday, 22 April attracted 822 guests and members of the public.

Some 45 people were so impressed with the new facilities on the day that they signed up to join the pool as new members.

The $27 million upgrade of the Aquatic Centre provides the Cumberland community with a year-round aquatic hub that provides a variety of water spaces for leisure, fitness and wellness.

All pools are heated and provide access for people with a disability. The new facilities include:

  • 50m outdoor pool
  • 30m x 25m outdoor water polo pool
  • Outdoor children’s interactive water play shaded pool
  • Air-conditioned indoor 25m pool
  • Family leisure pool and program pool
  • New modern change rooms

Former Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ruth Everuss was the guest of honour on the day.

“Thank you so very, very much for Saturday. My head swivelled for one and half hours,” Ms Everuss said.

“I suppose after 30 years I knew every inch of the old pool and I have to say Cumberland Council has done more than a sensational job.”

The community open day activities included children’s activities, swim squad demonstrations, inflatable fun, group fitness classes and giveaways.

The pool operators, Belgravia Leisure, will operate a comprehensive swimming and water safety program. The pool will offer both a competitive squad and a team squad programs on Monday and Thursday evenings.

For women there will be a ladies only swimming session each Wednesday from 2:30pm to 3:00pm. And a ladies only casual swim pass will be available each Sunday from 3:00pm to 5pm in the program pool.
