3 March 2017 – Media Release

Cumberland’s first Events Strategy was adopted at last night’s ordinary meeting of Council. Cumberland staff seized the opportunity provided by the 2016 amalgamation to conduct detailed research and community engagement to find out the unique needs of the local community when it comes to events. Based on feedback from 1,900 residents, the Strategy sets out a range of small and large events that support an active and connected community and that attract visitors from across Sydney.

The strategy builds on a remarkably successful opening year of events. From July 2016 to February 2017, Cumberland Council delivered 30 events which engaged more than 100,000 residents and visitors to Cumberland breaking attendance records of the former Councils.

A key priority during the formation of the strategy was creating new opportunities and supporting the development of events that help define Cumberland as a new community and capture the collective spirit, history and endeavour of all the people within its boundaries.

To accompany the Events Strategy, Council has today released its

2017-2018 Events Program

outlining all of Council’s events to be delivered over the course of the next year across a number of categories responding to specific characteristics of Cumberland. The program includes a number of returning events such as the Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival, Christmas Celebrations and Australia Day but also introduces new events such as Locale; a series of happenings across the area allowing people to see inside and better understand the culture, art and history of the people and places of Cumberland.

“Through events Cumberland can define its place in Sydney by telling the stories of residents, capturing the history and the ‘now’ of the area and celebrating the diverse cultures that create this vibrant and evolving place that many call home,” Interim General Manager, Malcolm Ryan said.

“That’s why Council created this Strategy. It will become one of the core pillars in building a strong sense of community identity, togetherness and spirit around Cumberland.”

“The events proposed help us to recognise the natural beauty of Cumberland’s expansive parks and gardens and bring to life the personality of our neighbourhoods. They celebrate our unique community and create new connections. They present an evolving opportunity to support and partner with our businesses to build a stronger local economy,” Mr Ryan said.

This Strategy has been developed for a three year period to enable the growth of emerging events, but our Events Program will be reviewed annually.
