Safe-asbestos-removal-in-progress

November is Asbestos Awareness Month and, as Cumberland forms part of Western Sydney’s ‘fibro belt’ – an area where the incidence of asbestos is the highest in all of Sydney – Council is providing a number of services to help residents and businesses identify and dispose of asbestos safely.

Any Australian home built before 1987 is likely to incorporate building products and materials containing asbestos. Australia has one of the highest rates of asbestos-related diseases in the world.

Cumberland Council Mayor Greg Cummings called on residents who live in an ageing home to make use of Council’s free services and help ‘fix the fibro belt’.

“Asbestos is a problem all over Australia and asbestos related diseases are continuing to increase among Australians because of exposure during home renovations and maintenance,” Mr Cummings said.

“This is made even scarier by the fact that a large part of Cumberland forms Sydney’s fibro belt where many of the houses were built in the post war period.

“We know how important it is educate everyone about the dangers of this substance, which is why we are holding two free information sessions.

“The first will be held on Thursday 23 November from 6.30-8.30pm at Merrylands Community Centre, the second on Thursday 30 November from 6.30-8.30pm at Berala Community Centre.

“If you’re unsure whether or not your house has asbestos, Council is offering to send a professional out on Friday 24 November or Saturday 25 November to do a free household inspection.

“Council can also pick up and dispose of up to 10 square metres of abstesos. Removal and collections of more than 10 square metres of asbestos should be organised with a private company.

“The main message is about safety, so if you are ever unsure call Council and we can advise you on the matter.”
