The 2017 Clubs for Cumberland ClubGrants Scheme has concluded with $1,148,931.13 being allocated to 71 projects and services that assist people locally. The Scheme encourages clubs to give back to their community at a grassroots level by allowing those with gaming machine profits over $1 million to apply for a tax rebate of 1.85%. The rebate is then used to provide grants to not-for-profit community organisations.

Participating Clubs in the Cumberland Scheme were:

  • Auburn Soccer Sports Club
  • Auburn Tennis and Recreational Club
  • DOOLEYS Lidcombe Catholic Club
  • Granville Diggers
  • Guildford Leagues
  • Club Merrylands Bowling
  • Merrylands RSL
  • Wenty Leagues

Cumberland Council Administrator Viv May recognised the contribution of the local clubs which enable valuable work by local services.

“Congratulations to the 55 local organisations that received funds that will go straight towards supporting the community,” said Mr May.

“The scheme is a great initiative by the State Government and Cumberland Council is excited to be able to administer the process at a local level.

“The grants provided in Cumberland were specifically for projects that we knew would be improving the living standards of low income and disadvantaged people.

“That means the majority of the Grants went towards Community Welfare and Social Services; Community Development; Community Health Services and Employment Assistance Activities.

“For example, the largest grant awarded, for the sum of $75,000, was provided to Youth Off the Streets for their project that aims to provide support to students who have dropped out of mainstream school due to substance abuse, homelessness and juvenile offending.”
