Cumberland residents have the opportunity to recognise the outstanding contribution of their fellow citizens with nominations open for the Cumberland Council 2018 Australia Day Awards.

The awards shine a well-deserved spotlight on the individuals and events that elevate Cumberland into a place where everyone can feel welcome, belong and succeed. The awards are separated into five categories:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year (Up to 25 years)
  • Sportsperson of the Year (26+ years)
  • Young Sportsperson of the Year (Up to 25 years)
  • Community Event of the Year

Earlier this year Mohammed Al-Zoubi was recognised for his decade long service to the local community, receiving a Highly Commended Award in the Local Citizen of the Year category.

Al-Zoubi came to Australia in 1996 from Jordan and only two years later, with the help of friends, established the Auburn Islamic Community Centre (AICC). The Centre has played an important role in welcoming people to the area through its extensive outreach programs.

“Serving the community is the best way to feel happy about yourself. It is something to teach kids and others; about service to the community and your country,” said Mr Al-Zoubi.

“It is very important that people are recognised for the work they are doing in the field. It is an encouragement to them and shows our appreciation.

“Nominating someone is not only good for the individual. It is good for the entire community. It encourages other people to follow their example.

“I encourage everyone to take the time, maybe only ten minutes, to download the form and nominate someone who deserves it.”
