International Women’s Day Awards & Events

Council celebrated International Women’s Day with a series of activities and community events last week which I attended, including the Tamil Valarchi Manram and SydWest Multicultural Services International Women’s Day Conference, the Rotary Club of Granville celebrations and the SEVA International Women’s Day event. Six women were recognised for their hard work and achievements at Council’s International Women’s Day Cumberland Awards Ceremony which was held for the first time this year to recognise and acknowledge the contributions of women in our local community. The award winners were: Shaqaeq Rezai who won the Young Female Ambassador Award, Michelle Pearce who was awarded the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Achievement Award, Janu Dhayanathan who took home the Access and Disability Award, Aynalem Tessema who won the Community Event Award, Pilar Lopez who won the Multicultural Leadership Award and Isabel Lorenzi who won the Local Business Woman of the Year Award. Congratulations to the award winners. I look forward to seeing your ongoing work in our community.

Nowruz Community Event

Council is gearing up to host its first Nowruz community event this weekend, on Saturday 18 March at the Granville Centre from 5:30pm. Nowruz means ‘New Day’ and marks the first day of spring. It has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years by cultures around the world with significance to countries in the Middle East, parts of Asia and Southeast Europe. The evening will mark cultural traditions with a haft-sin table arrangement featuring the seven symbolic items. There will also be live entertainment and performances from dancers, singers and Turkish drummers as well as a range of food vendors, stall holders and art and cultural activities.

Australia Day and Queens Birthday Honours List

I recently hosted an afternoon tea in honour of the 2022/23 Australia Day and Queens Birthday Honours recipients. The afternoon reception was a lovely opportunity to meet remarkable people who have made a significant contribution in our community and to get to know their unique stories. Congratulations to them all!

Me with the 2022/23 Australia Day and Queen’s Birthday Honours recipients: The Very Reverend Father Peter Williams AM, Melissa Attia PSM, Arthur Watson OAM, Jennifer Mary Jones OAM and Mark Harris PSM.

Kamban Tamil Literary Festival

I recently attended the 17th Anniversary of Kamban Kazhagam Australia’s Kamban Tamil Literary Festival. The evening included readings from Tamil literature, performances from musicians, prayers and the sharing of moral teachings. It was such an honour to be invited to this event as the Tamil community came together to celebrate literacy, enrich their community and preserve their culture.
