Rental Assistance

I was pleased to see the Federal Budget include some support for those in need, including an increase in Commonwealth Rent Assistance. The Premier of NSW, Chris Minns, announced plans to reform rental laws in the state by appointing a rental commissioner and introducing legislation to stop secret rental bidding to create a fairer rental market. It is hoped that these measures will help rebalance the housing market and ease pressures on families. I know that renters are facing a challenging time with the cost of rent and living expenses soaring amid high inflation. If you are facing difficulties, don’t struggle alone. There is a range of Council support as well as external services providing assistance which can be found at www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/assistance

National Reconciliation Week - 27 May to 3 June

National Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and how to work towards reconciliation in Australia. The theme this year is ‘Be a Voice for Generations,’ which encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation through our everyday lives, such as where we live, work and socialise. To find out what events are happening near you during National Reconciliation Week or to find out how you can contribute, visit www.reconciliation.org.au/our-work/national-reconciliation-week

Mayoral Summit on Waste

I recently attended the Mayoral Summit on Waste, held at Sydney Town Hall on Thursday 18 May. Mayors and representatives from metropolitan councils in Sydney attended the summit which discussed the role councils play in waste management and explored the challenges in resource recovery. This included the growing costs of waste management and the need to increase infrastructure capacity. Council currently has a waste and resource recovery strategy which outlines our approach to help residents reduce waste and increase recycling in our Local Government Area. Norford Park Memorial Plaque

A new plaque honouring Joe Dougall OAM, Reg Norford and Lloyd Newman has been installed at Norford Park in Chester Hill. This plaque acknowledges the significant people who founded this park and who contributed to the local community. Norford Park was opened in 1981 and provided a new venue for rugby league matches. It initially consisted of a single playing field, an amenities block, goal posts, spectator embankments and a canteen. Today the park has been extended to include two fields and is fitted with more facilities including floodlighting for training at night and updated toilets and amenities. For more information about Norford Park, visit www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/norford-park
