Youth Week 2023

Youth Week officially commenced last week, and it has been great to see our young people come together to have fun, share ideas, connect over common interests and showcase their skills and talents. The theme this year is Connect. Celebrate. Participate. Celebrations are set to continue this week with an Open Mic Night and the highly anticipated Connect, Participate and Celebrate event to be held at the Granville Centre, this Friday 28 April from 5pm to 9:30pm. Bengali New Year Festival

The Bengali New Year Festival was held at the Holroyd Centre recently. The festival, also known as Pôhela Boishakh, is a colourful event, rich in culture and history with community members dressing in traditional Bengali attire to bid farewell to the old year and welcome in the new year. It was wonderful to experience this cultural event with the Bengali community as people came together to exchange greetings with each other and pray for peace and prosperity for the coming year.

ANZAC Day

To commemorate ANZAC Day, Australia’s national day of remembrance, I joined veterans, their families and community members at the ANZAC Day Services at Merrylands RSL Sub-Branch, Guildford Leagues Club and the Consortium of Tamil Associations NSW. It was an important day to unite, reflect and acknowledge the thousands of soldiers, servicemen and women who sacrificed so much during military operations. Lest We Forget.

Iftar Celebrations

Last week, Council hosted its 2023 Iftar Celebration Dinner at the Holroyd Centre. The evening saw a large number of community and faith leaders gather to celebrate the ritual of breaking fast during the holy month of Ramadan. It was lovely to observe this significant tradition with esteemed guests including Dr. Abdurahman Asaroglu from the Auburn Gallipoli Mosque, Mohammed Al Zoubi President of the Auburn Islamic Community Centre and Sheikh Sami Eid from Alridwan Community Centre. On behalf of Council, I would like to wish our community members of the Islamic faith, an Eid Mubarak.
