Message from Mayor Lake

Mayor Lisa Lake

NSW Election 2023

Following last week’s State Election I would like to congratulate our newly elected Members of Parliament who hold seats in the Cumberland local government area; Lynda Voltz for Auburn, Julia Finn for Granville, Hugh McDermott for Prospect and David Saliba for Fairfield. Our local area presents many exciting opportunities but also some challenges. I look forward to us all working together with this new State Government for the benefit of our community.

Easter Celebrations

Council hosted its Easter Celebration at Central Gardens in Merrylands over the weekend, and it was lovely to meet all the children and families who came out to join in the festivities. It was the first time Council has hosted an Easter event, with many snapping up photos with the Easter Bunny and participating in the workshops, activities and outdoor cinema. Easter is celebrated all over the world, marking the end of the Lenten season. To those who are celebrating Easter this weekend, I wish you, your friends and family a happy and joyous day.

Beryl Gunther Plaque Unveiling

I recently attended the unveiling of a special memorial plaque, commemorating the late Beryl Gunther who sadly passed away last year. Beryl was an active member of our community who made a significant contribution to Granville and beyond. Members of Beryl’s family attended the ceremony and spoke fondly about her life, shared stories, memories and accomplishments. It was an honour to be part of the unveiling of this plaque, in her memory.

April School Holiday Program

The school holidays are fast approaching and Council has a jam-packed program for kids and youth of all ages and abilities. Council community centres and facilities will be holding a range of arts and crafts workshops, sporting and fitness clinics, film screenings and more. Parents can also register their child for the April School Holiday Care programs. Registrations are now open. To reserve a place or to find out more visit: www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/school-holiday-activities

Ramadan Street Festival

Auburn Road is set to become a food bazaar for one night only with the return of the Ramadan Street Festival on Saturday 15 April. This cultural event will host a huge line-up of food trucks and street food stalls alongside famous Auburn eateries for an authentic Ramadan outdoor dining experience. Ramadan is the name of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is observed by people of the Islamic faith worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community. Venturer Scout Peak Awards

I recently attended the Venturer Scout Peak Awards held by the 1st Westmead Scouts Group. Scout member, Jasmine Rowe won the Venturer Scouts Peak Award (formerly known as the Queen’s Scout Award). To achieve this award, Jasmine completed a series of tasks and activities spanning personal development, outdoor adventure skills, leadership development and personal growth. She achieved all this whilst successfully completing her HSC with the additional challenge of the pandemic. Congratulations Jasmine!
