A pop-up park on Dunmore Street in Wentworthville has been installed by Cumberland City Council this week as an innovative way to bring the natural world to an urban environment.

The pop-up park will be trialled until February 2021 and enables Council to pilot new ideas for streets as shared spaces that support healthier, safer and more resilient communities.

“Delivering on my commitment since becoming Mayor, this project facilitates the metropolitan renewal of the area,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“The aim was to deliver an initiative that improves walkability along Dunmore Street and develop a space that can be enjoyed while mitigating the impacts of urban heat.

“Our design prioritises shading and heat smart materials to test heat absorbing properties across a range of natural and artificial surfaces.

“A cool street will improve the level of comfort for visitors and workers and reduce heat-stress for people gathering outdoors.”

The pop-up park supports the vision identified in Council’s Wentworthville Public Domain Plan 2020, to establish a new linear park that supports outdoor dining, shaded seating areas, lighting features and Water Sensitive Urban Design.

"Our community has told us that they want more public spaces and the installation of a pop-up park will transform the Wentworthville precinct, creating safe, attractive and accessible streets and places,” said Mayor Christou.

“I encourage families and locals to pay the pop-up park a visit this summer.”

The pop-up park will be trialled until February 2021.

This project was funded by the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program.
