Cumberland will be the location for a variety of official ceremonies marking Remembrance Day this year. In 2017, 11 November marks the 99th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18).

Cumberland’s schools and RSL sub branches have organised a range of events to recognise Australians who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. Last Sunday, Mayor Greg Cummings attended a walk held at Charles Mace Memorial Park Merrylands RSL Sub Branch. The Mayor will also be in attendance at a soil collection taking place this Friday at Wentworthville Public School while fellow Councillors will paying their respects at ceremonies in the local area this weekend.

“This Saturday is the time to reflect on all of the brave souls who put it all on the line in conflicts around the world,” said Mayor Greg Cummings.

“The fact there are so many local ceremonies for residents to acknowledge this special occasion is a testament to the spirit of Cumberland.

“Around the area you can see memorials to those local heros who have been involved in armed conflicts, representing the nation, as well as family, friends and neighbours here in Cumberland.

“This is the perfect chance to show the value of their contribution and pay your respects by attending one of the local ceremonies and spare a minute of silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

“It’s also an opportunity to meet other people in the community and together reflect on the sacrifices of the past, and the future opportunities that those sacrifices have provided all of us in a special place like Cumberland.”
