Wentworthville’s main street is set to come alive as part of Cumberland Council’s Diwali Festival, this month.
Taking place on Saturday 18 November, Station Street will be decked out in lights, food and market stalls, art installations and performances for the one night only cultural celebration.
Known as the festival of lights, Diwali, or Deepavali, is one of the most important Hindu festivals that is celebrated in the subcontinent. Thousands around the world decorate their houses and come together to exchange gifts, feast on sweets and share in the joy of traditions and culture as they celebrate the victory of light over darkness.
Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake extended her warmest wishes to everyone celebrating Diwali, and said it was one of the major cultural festivals that Council hosts each year for everyone to enjoy.
“To celebrate this uplifting event, Council will once again be hosting the Diwali Festival where everyone is welcome regardless of faith or background,” she said.
“Diwali is a time of celebration, unity and harmony and with over 15 percent of our population originating from cultures within the Indian subcontinent, this festival is a significant event for our community to be a part of.”
During the festival, festivalgoers will be able to wander through the Street Bazaar and explore the plethora of market stalls available that will include kids toys and traditional clothing and jewellery.
A range of international cuisines from restaurants, street food stalls and food trucks on Station Street will also be on offer.
As part of the festivities, the fan favourite Bollywood Block Party will be making a return to the festival to provide the very best Bollywood music provided by DJ Bali, and Friend Park on McKern Street will feature a collaborative art installation ‘Kaleidoscope’, led by Wentworthville art studio Mindkshreta, made up of pieces contributed by Cumberland community members.
Rick Street Carpark will also be decked out with lights and will feature music, food trucks, a DIY Chalk Rangoli activity, plus the opportunity to unleash your inner cricketer at the street cricket game.
Council’s Diwali Festival will be held on Saturday 18 November at Station Street in Wentworthville, from 5pm to 10pm.
