Cumberland Council is asking for community feedback on the draft Auburn Botanic Gardens Masterplan which has been placed on public exhibition until Monday 30 April 2018.
Mayor Greg Cummings said this is an exciting opportunity for the community to have their say on what the next 20 years looks like for Auburn Botanic Gardens, which has become a much-loved treasure of Cumberland including the now famous Cherry Blossom Festival.
“The Auburn Botanic Gardens are a sanctuary in Cumberland where people can come to enjoy the peace, serenity and scenery as well as learn about the beautiful native flora and fauna,” Mayor Cummings said.
“The plan is to enhance and improve the existing gardens to become a place where people are transported out of the city and into a garden of rest and relaxation, horticultural interest and educational experiences.
“The draft Masterplan has been created after Council consultation with the public last year which asked the community what they would like to see improved in the garden.
“Some of the proposals include succulent and desert gardens, new clearer and inviting garden entries, more colour and seasonal planting, a rainforest area, an edible garden, amphitheatre upgrade, and more seating.
“Previous surveys indicate that around 250,000 people visit the gardens each year with around 70 percent coming from outside the Local Government Area. This shows that not only is Auburn Botanic Gardens a special place for people living in our community but is also a valued destination for visitors both local and even international.
“The vision of revitalising Auburn Botanic Gardens is our opportunity to promote what we have on offer in Cumberland and create an oasis for all. I encourage all Cumberland residents to use this chance to be a part of the future of their botanic gardens.”
